I get asked this a lot, so let me take you back. Years ago, researchers Ken and Maddy Dychtwald coined the phrase “The Age Wave” to describe something they saw coming: a massive demographic shift as the population aged.
It was an Age Wave then.
But it’s a Caregiver Tsunami now.
We’ve moved through the manufacturing age, the space race, and the tech boom. Now we’re living in what I call the Longevity Age – and caregiving isn’t the exception to modern life anymore. It’s the norm.
65.7 million Americans are currently serving as family caregivers. That’s 29% of the adult population and 31% of all U.S. households. Chances are, if it’s not you today, it will be tomorrow, or it already was yesterday.
I wrote Caregiver Tsunami because I’ve lived this wave from both sides – as the state official once shaping aging policy, and as the daughter standing in the hospital hallway making impossible decisions. That dual view is exactly why I wanted to write a book that didn’t just explain the crisis, but helped people ride the wave instead of getting pulled under by it.
I talk more about this title and what inspired the book in a short video on my YouTube channel. Watch the full story behind the title here: https://youtu.be/itgAI03Qysw
If you’re in the thick of caregiving right now, or you know it’s coming, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to figure this out from scratch.
