From the Policy Table to the Hospital Hallway
For more than 25 years, I have worked at the intersection of aging policy, senior living, and caregiver advocacy. I have served as a Michigan cabinet official under two governors. I have led marketing for one of the country’s largest senior living organizations.
I have sat in policy meetings where decisions were made that would affect hundreds of thousands of older adults and the people who care for them. And I have sat in hospital hallways, too.
That dual perspective – the official at the policy table and the daughter doing her best in a system that can feel impossible to navigate – is at the heart of everything I do. It’s why I wrote Caregiver Tsunami. And it’s why I speak.
What Happens in the Room
When I step onto a stage, I’m not delivering a lecture. I’m having a conversation – with an entire room at once.
There are stories. Some of them will make you laugh out loud, because caregiving, for all its weight, has moments of genuine absurdity that only the people in it can fully appreciate. Some of them will remind you exactly why you chose this work in the first place, or why you’re showing up for your family the way you are, even when it’s hard.
There is practical guidance, grounded in real policy experience and real caregiving experience – not theory. And there is always, underneath everything, a deep respect for the people in the room and the people they serve and love.
I have spoken to aging services professionals who have devoted decades to this field and still left me with something new to think about. I have spoken to HR leaders who walked in uncertain whether their employees’ caregiving responsibilities were really their concern, and walked out ready to change their policies. I have spoken to family caregivers who came in exhausted and overwhelmed and left feeling, for the first time in a long time, that someone understood.
That moment – when something shifts in a room – is why I do this work.
